A few days ago the press cottoned on to the fact that private plates are still a lucrative investment and that the market is as lively as it ever was. "Plate Prices Boom!" they declared, and "Top Prices Paid!".

The two World Wars punctuate the history of British entertainment in a conspicuous way, which seems ironic when one considers that there can be few things less entertaining than warfare. As if swept away by the new broom that heralded a fresh start after WWI, the music hall tradition that had flourished from the mid 1800s in British theatres was replaced by something called "variety".

2020 has been one of the most challenging years in living memory, both for the UK's population as a whole and for British businesses. Obviously, the issue of universal concern has been the Covid-19/Coronavirus pandemic. Its impact and consequences are both profound and ongoing and, with no real end in sight, it's impossible to count the human or economic cost. Despite the unprecedented situation, people and businesses are finding ways to carry on with life. With "normal" a distant memory, the story has become one of learning, adapting and innovating.

Sadly, lockdown returns. It shouldn't really come as a surprise; things just haven't gone too well. The timing is unfortunate as public firework displays that may have been planned under the current restrictions will now be unable to go ahead. Many people will be disappointed and shops have already reported a late surge in people purchasing fireworks for private family displays in their own gardens.
