Number plate formats
Dateless number plates

The first registration numbers were dateless plates and became compulsory for every vehicle in 1904. Unlike the formats that succeeded them, they do not have an age identifier. Instead, they display a one, two or three letter code either preceding or following up to four numbers.
Suffix number plates

The suffix number plate system was introduced in February 1963 and ran until July 1983. The age identifier is the final letter of the registration number. For example, ‘B’ indicates that the number plate was released in 1964. The area code can be found in the second and third letters.
Prefix number plates

The prefix style of number plates are the successor to suffix registration numbers. They came into circulation in August 1983. Unlike prefix registrations, the age identifier is the first character of the number plate.
Current style number plates

Current style number plates were established by the DVLA in 2001. At the beginning of the plate, there are two letters representing the area of issuing authority. These are followed by an age identifier in the form of two numbers and, finally, three random characters.
