Number plates used by the royal family

JFIF File

Over the years, we have spotted various members of the royal family drive or be driven in the most luxurious vehicles ever produced. So it comes as no surprise that the royal fleet of state cars includes an enviable collection of modern and classic cars from Rolls Royce, Bentley and even Jaguar. Despite the fact that royal state cars do not bear number plates at the front or rear, the cars are typically registered with dateless registrations.

Queen Elizabeth II

Although she didn’t actually have or even need a driving licence, the Queen, who sadly passed away on 8th September 2022, was well known for her love of driving. During her illustrious reign, Her Majesty owned the private number plates, MYT 1, MYT 2 and MYT 3 currently registered to Range Rovers.

In fact, the private registration, MYT 1 was spotted on a Range Rover at the Queen's funeral and is cheeky reference to Her Majesty’s british honours as the ‘Mighty One.’

Queen Elizabeth II also owned A 7, which was one of the first number plates to be spotted on British roads and was released by the London council in 1903.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother

The Queen Mother also boasted an enviable fleet of classic, iconic state cars, including a pair of Daimler DE 36 inherited from King George VI in 1952. This car was registered with the number plate of NLT 2.

In 1954, she purchased a Daimler 'Royal Stock' DE 36 Straight-Eight landaulette and made use of this car regularly. It was customarily re-registered as NLT 6 and served as her 'No.2 Royal Landaulette' for the rest of the decade.

A year later, she acquired a Daimler DK400 limousine for her personal use. Unlike her other vehicles, this wasn’t painted in a royal claret and was registered with NLT 1. Another personal vehicle of hers was a Jaguar Mark VII M, later replaced with the long-wheelbase XJ12 model with NLT 7 as its registration number.

Other Royal Family Members

Prince Phillip

Over the course of Prince Philip’s life, he owned some interesting and memorable cars: None more popular than his most known car, the Lagonda Drophead Coupe bought in 1954. He kept the car, which was originally registered with OXR 1, until 1961. It was later assigned to a Land Rover Freelander. He was also known to drive a Land Rover Discovery with the vehicle registration OXR 2.

Princess Margaret

Queen Elizabeth II’s sister ordered a silver Rolls Royce Wraith II for public and private engagements. The car was customised with various special features to her liking and was originally registered with 3 GXM.

Princess Anne

The princess once had the number plate of 1 ANN. As you can imagine, the private registration was fairly obvious and was given up for security purposes. In 2005, we had the privilege of selling the private plate. Currently, the registration number is worth £125k. Additionally, we have also sold ANN 1, a private registration that has a valuation of £200k today.

Queen Alexandra

Following King Edward VII’s death in 1910, the widowed queen received his 1907 Daimler shooting brake and was graced with the registration plate of LD 4352. In addition, she regularly used a 1910 Landaulette with the number plate LB 7078.

King George VI

It was known that King George VI was an avid admirer of Lanchester cars, purchasing several of them in the 1920s and 1930s. Before the unfortunate death of his father, the king had placed an order for two Daimlers, a limousine and a landaulette. They were both rebadged as Lanchesters. Both vehicles were painted black and were delivered with the registration plates of JJ 4 and JJ 5.

Due to King Charles III’s ascension, it is likely that he will inherit all the previous dateless number plates owned by Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother. As he is monarch and doesn’t need to display a number plate, we will never be able to see these private registrations on any of his cars. A collection that includes Jaguar XJ, Aston Martin DB6 volante and a fully electric Jaguar I-Pace. However, you can be certain that more elegant vehicles will be added to the fleet of state cars with exclusive dateless registrations in the future.

Regtransfers would like to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will always remain a huge part of history.
