We have been excited about the investment potential of private number plates for a long time - literally years - and we have been trying to share that excitement for almost as long.
Think about it: our very existence as a successful company is proof of that investment potential. The continued existence of our many successful competitors and colleagues in the field is further proof.
As time has passed, our message about personal registrations as an investment has got through. A procession or headline-grabbing record-breakers has done a lot to help that. The media, traditional broadcast and print as well as online, has reported successive holders of the UK's most-expensive-plate title. Afzal Kahn's purchase of F 1 for £440,000 back in 2008 and John Collins' acquisition of 25 O for over half a million pounds in 2014 are just two of the high points that have dominated headlines. Thanks to those, and other stories of spectacular auction performances, people are finally seeing the light about private number plates as a real investment.
Regtransfers recently contributed to an article on the This Is Money website that relates several impressive real world examples of successful number plates investment.
Similarly, as we've mentioned before, at the end of last year, the Daily Telegraph published the headline "Big money in the red-hot world of personalised number plates" above a story that confirmed that message.
The future looks bright
The market for private plates doesn't seem to be slowing down. On the contrary: it seems that more and more people are seeing the appeal and buying personal registrations of their own. Prices have remained consistently healthy throughout some of the most challenging times in living memory.
Our industry has had the good fortune to endure financial crises and pandemics and to emerge largely unscathed. We don't know why, but we are very grateful that is the case, and very reassured. While we take nothing for granted, the resilience of our industry gives us cause for optimism.
Sharing the success
We're happy to share success. We are not afraid of competition: in fact we think it's a good thing. We are delighted to see others join us in the buying and selling of personal registrations. The more activity and buzz there is in our field, the more people there are promoting the product, recruiting new enthusiasts and growing the market.
For some years, Regtransfers and a couple of the other veteran dealers were small voices promoting a niche product that was seen as being relevant only to the rich and famous. Of course, that has all changed and private plates are as common a car accessory as stickers, air fresheners or furry dice (are furry dice even still a thing?).
The people who buy number plates are not all pop stars, actors or TV personalities. Big names from the world of business have revealed themselves to be fans of private plates and many have graced the pages of our free magazine. When astute millionaire panellists from Dragons' Den sing the praises of a product, you just know there's something to it.
I’d consider buying more, but the price would have to be right. I’ve made a bit of money on them.
The more the merrier. Why not join us?
As we said earlier, the more people active in our industry the more potential buyers become aware of our product through advertising, marketing and recommendation. Every private plate sold and assigned to a car is advertising for our product. All we need to do is continue building an unbeatable reputation by delivering unbeatable service.
Why not explore the possibilities of private plates as an investment for yourself?
