DVLA auction, September 2024

The top 5 number plates sold at DVLA Auction in September 2024

DVLA's September 2024 auction was an online event that ran from Wednesday 4th to Tuesday 10th September 2024.

As always, prices quoted in this report include fees and taxes.

September's top 5

This month's strongest performer in terms of price was a bit of a mystery plate. YAY 4H, which sold for £32,193 is close to a representation of the Arabic name Yayha, it could also spell the name Yaya, but it could equally be intended to depict a celebratory 'Yay!' for someone with the initial H.

Registration 123 RS

The only actual Yayah we could track down is Yayah Kallon, a Sierra Leonean footballer who would be, to say the least, an unlikely purchaser.

In second place was THE 60D. One doesn't have to be omniscient to guess the meaning here. We're not sure if it was actually purchased by The Almighty but whoever did buy it paid a powerful £29,240. Third in the September rankings came another cryptic registration, 123 RS. Possibly bought for the RS initials that could apply to the purchaser or a car. Either way, the number cost its buyer £28,983.

At number four was K111 NGG. We don't really think it was His Majesty who paid £25,799 for this one. The Palace probably prefers him to travel a little more discreetly.

147 W completes our top 5, commanding a respectable £22,255. Again, there's not much to go on regarding its significance to the buyer, but it's a neat registration that would look good on any car.

Words

It's been a while since we saw a 'Devil' plate in the auction. Despite its inclusion in the same sale as THE 60D, Armageddon didn't happen and DEV 7L achieved £17,157.

At a glance, FU11 GAS is a perfect spelling of 'Full gas', so, in its own way it's a great number plate. But 'Full gas'? If it's not a reference to maximum acceleration then we daren't speculate on its meaning. Whatever it is, it was worth £12,920 to someone.

With Halloween approaching, it was nice to see the spooky side represented by WRA 177H (Wraith) at £7,155. It would also be the perfect number for a Rolls-Royce Wraith.

One has to wonder who might have purchased BYP 45S (£7,014). Could it have been a heart surgeon? Or perhaps someone who works in the highways planning office?

One of the best word representations in this month's auction was AR71 STS. At just £5,370 this would have been a real bargain for an agent representing people in the entertainment industry.

Names

Name number plates are ever popular, as we see time and time again. Amongst the monikers bought in September were 70 ONY ("Tony") at £21,921, LUS 1A (Lusia or Luisa) at £19,353, and WNN 1E (Winnie) at £17,157.

HAM 12H at just £11,649 was a steal for such a visually successful representation of 'Hamish'.

For the literary-minded, D44 NTE ('Dante'), at £6,551, was an amusing inclusion when considered in relation to DEV 7L and THE 60D.

We thought that CEO 80B would be an amusing plate for any company CEO named Bob and, to a high-flying CEO, £7,155 is surely cheap as chips.

Cars

We cannot recall an auction where car references didn't play a big part, and this month was no exception. Amongst the notable car-themed plates were 735 S (£19,866), which would suit a Ferrari 735 S and MC74 REN, which is one of the best McLaren combinations we've seen and a real bargain at £8,503.

Although the brand doesn't specialise in flashy supercars, what Peugeot owner wouldn't be chuffed with PEU 930T? A perfect representation for a modest £6,641.

BMW 30E (£5,280) is surely a perfect plate for anyone with a new BMW X3 30e to personalise.

Others

5 OAD would make a perfect metalhead plate for any ardent System of a Down fan, at a modest £6,782. The ever-popular theme of symmetry was embodied in OO74 OOO at £7,787, while the common motif of strings of zeros and/or letter "O"s returned in the shape of C60 OOO (£7,283), P7 OOO (£5,255) and N300 OOO (£4,613).

We expect the perfect sea fishing plate, SEA 845S ('Sea bass') at £4,587 made some coastal angler very happy.
