The DVLA's November 2022 auction was held from Wednesday 23rd to Tuesday 29th and was an online-only event.
Unlike the previous auction in October, where Halloween seemed to play a part in shaping the selection of numbers on offer, there was no discernible theme to this latest sale. However, that doesn't mean there were no patterns or coincidences to be seen.
Please note that the prices given in this article are all-inclusive.
Cream of the crop
Top place in the price-tag table went to 66 O at £81,113. It's a great plate with real visual appeal.
Two of the top 10 performers in the price rankings were clearly there for the Aston Martin fans: 1 VLK (£64,421) would be a perfect number 1 plate for anyone with those initials but at that price we'd bet that the purchaser may be planning to display it on an Aston Martin Valkyrie. As for A707 DBX, well, £25,773 would normally be a chunky price to pay for a prefix plate containing uncommon initials, but for an Aston Martin DBX707 it is just the ticket and actually seems like quite a bargain when one considers the impact car and plate would make together.
CSK 1 (£51,453) did pretty much what we'd expect a nice, 3-letter number 1 plate to do, while 8 XW (£30,935) confirms what we saw at the last auction: X and Y plates that used to lag at the end of the auction are enjoying a real boost in popularity at the moment and, of course, their prices are reflecting this. Great news for anyone who bought a nice X or Y registration at a bargain price a while ago.
OO03 OOO is another plate with echoes of what we saw in October. Unless they clearly spell a name or word, these current-style registrations rarely achieve stratospheric prices at the moment but there is something about the ones with strong visual symmetry that defies expectation. Last time we saw OO11 OOO sell for £17,542, which we thought was pretty good. OO03 OOO, however, left that one in a cloud of dust as it raced ahead to £30,395. It really is fascinating to observe and predict the changes in trends and preferences. Of course, therein lies the secret to successful investment!
