DVLA auction, June 2024

The top 5 number plates sold at DVLA Auction in June 2024

DVLA's June 2024 auction was an online event that ran from Wednesday 19th June to Tuesday 25th June 2024.

As always, prices quoted in this report include fees and taxes.

June's top 5

This month's auction was a little light on really impressive numbers, and the prices paid reflected the fairly routine range of registrations on offer. Nevertheless, there were still some interesting combinations and quite a few bargains to be had.

Registration 1 OOG

The top price in June's sale was the £46,959 paid for the enigmatic 1 OOG. Visually the combination could work as a representation of "1 dog" but, equally, it could mean 100 and the initial G, or something entirely different. Whatever the motive for buying, it's a good-looking number.

In second place, 150 HO (£36,058) would have been a fantastic plate for a person or business resident in Soho. Third came AVI 5 at £32,193, which would make an instantly recognisable "Avis" plate for promoting an Avis car rental franchise.

115 SA at £30,267 and 154 L at £30,126 came fourth and fifth respectively.

Reading material

The strongest performers amongst the word plates on offer in this auction were BAD 801S ("Bad boys") at £25,773, BAN 61N ("Bangin'") at £22,691 and THE 900D ("The good") at £20,637. Others on offer included FAS 76R ("Faster") at £19,995, COW 30Y ("Cowboy") at £14,923 and WTF 805S ("WTF Boss") at £13,100.

We also saw the return of the cryptocurrency theme we've observed in previous auctions as CR10 PTO ("Crypto") sold for £12,804.

Names

Name combinations bought in the June auction included NAZ 4 ("Naz A", "Naz 4" or "Naza") at £17,427, 84 DAM ("Adam") at £16,181, SOP 1A ("Sophia") at £14,576, BE17 TLY ("Bentley") at £12,933 and A88 BAS ("Abbass") at £11,662.

A handful of very good names were snapped up at bargain prices, including JUD 3C ("Jude C") which sold for £9,107, FU11 LER ("Fuller") for £8,952 and SV51 NGH ("SV Singh") for £8,439.

Cars

Car references were, as always, a big part of the sale and the usual plethora of possible Porsche plates went under the hammer as 911 JV (£18,120), PJS 911 (£11,649), 911 PUD (£8,156) and 911 JDD (£6,513) all found buyers. Of course, the BE17 TLY "Bentley" registration we mentioned above is very likely to have been bought by the owner of a Bentley car.

BUG 20 (£12,920) would be a great plate for a VW Beetle or a Bugatti.

Others

Another returning favourite was the theme of meaningless symmetry that has proven very popular with those who want strong visual impact without conveying a specific message. OO04 OOO , which sold for £14,204 was an excellent example, and continues a trend that has been visible for some time now.

The eternal popularity of the repeated digit "0" or letter "O" was demonstrated again this month by 125 OOO (£21,279), OOO 5L (£7,784), N70 OOO (£5,177), D100 OOO (£4,998). Again, these numbers don't convey any obvious meaning or message, but they are undeniably visually striking.
