Iwan Thomas (European gold medallist): R400 RUN - It's such a great way to celebrate my wins, and it's such an appropriate number plate for me

European 400 metres gold medallist Iwan Thomas did, in fact, have a previous incarnation as a world class BMX bike rider. In a successful BMX career spanning seven years, Iwan achieved top ten places in both the National Championships and the BMX World Championships.

Iwan actually took up athletics relatively late in life. As a youngster the BMX occupied much of his sporting time, as did rugby, but then at the age of 16 he decided to try his luck in a variety of track and field events at a school sports day. His performance exceeded all expectations, and he broke school records in every event he entered!

It wasn't until Iwan went to university, however, that he got involved with high level athletics, and it was at that time that he joined Newham & Essex Beagles AC.

There is obviously plenty of scope in his expected career span for many more spectacular achievements, but for a late starter to already have been awarded the MBE has to be good going by any standards!
