Willie Carson (champion jockey): I telephoned Regtransfers about a plate I was after, but one of your excellent salespeople, Jim Stewart, found a far more appropriate plate for me
Willie was born in Stirling, Scotland in November, 1942. His early career didn't get off to a spectacularly great start, and there were times when young Carson thought that it might be best to give up his dreams of being a jockey, but he stuck with it, and became one of the best known jockeys in British racing history.
Willie's cheery disposition and unique laugh are as well known as his dynamic style in the saddle. Looking back over his career, Willie probably best remembered for his outings with Nashwan and Dayjur, two fine, but very different, horses.
Willie is well known for another kind of sporting performance too. For many years he was a team captain and major character in the BBC's legendary sports quiz A Question of Sport - a role which exposed still more people to his individual sense of fun and humour.
These days Willie is often kept busy commentating for the BBC, and is also European racing manager for The Thoroughbred Corporation.
